My work : I’m an artist and professional manga artist of four years. My role is to create and to manage all the “drawing” parts, like comics and illustrations, from the storyboard (or sketch) to the board (the final illustration). I also participate in the creation of the story and the characters. In Studio Gothika, we always share our resources as a team because three brains are better than one.

Fell into manga because… I’ve always liked drawing, and when I discovered anime as a child, I happily plunged into it. I haven’t come out since! It was in high school that I really discovered manga, by entering a Japanese bookshop in Paris, and it was from there that I became interested in all aspects of manga (comics books, cartoons/anime, movies, etc.)

Thanks to manga I was able to discover a new form of graphics – black and white – and new kinds of stories, which fit me better and which allowed me, I think, to really release my imagination.

My first steps… I began to work for amateur fanzines/doujinshis ten years ago, making short stories (shojos) and fanart and original illustrations.

Seeing that the public liked what I was doing I decided to start my own fanzine/doujinshi called « Romance Yaoi ». It was about Boy’s Love because other fanzines were rather sensitive about the topic while the female public asked me for it. Ultimately they agreed to dedicate a small special issue to this subject. Moreover, they then often sought me for one shots or illustrations.

In short, the first issue of my fanzine went out for Epita (a French Convention) in 2000; by 2006 I had created a total of 10 issues (6 regular issues plus 4 special issues). This was the year I started working for an American publisher, Yaoi Press, with whom I signed on for a manga series in 3 volumes, with illustrations and one shots published in anthologies.

Work Methods : First, I do all my sketches, then I submit them to the other team members for check and validation, to correct them when necessary. Then, I do the inking. The entire process is done traditionally, i.e. by hand. I work some black parts with a brush and some ink. Then, from there, I scan my board and the rest of the black parts are done on the computer. Finally I add tones using a graphic tablet and with software adapted for this kind of work.

Like… Making sketches, inking and… drawing beautiful boys. ;D

Hate… Making backgrounds, being stressed and getting things to do at the last minute.

Would like… To do character design in the video game industry.

My work : I’ve been a novelist for more than 10 years, and have published fifteen works in both France and abroad. Within Studio Gothika, my work consists of creating stories and writing them.

Occasionally, I also color using the computer, do backgrounds, DTP (Desktop Publishing) and graphic editing (retouch) since I was a graphic designer for several years before becoming a writer. Though the other two members of the Studio do all this for me when I need it, I try to assist them when necessary.

Fell into manga because… I enjoy its dynamic, the cut-out process and …the thickness! I would suffocate in a comic of 40 or 50 pages with square boxes, and the formal ban to break the established « rules », or to take out the frames.

Work Methods : I always begin with a synopsis, then a more detailed synopsis, followed by chapter by chapter decomposition. Finally, I end with boards and a script for each panel.

Like… Creating new characters and giving them a past and history.

Hate… How some people intellectualize manga because they’re afraid to look a little bit stupid.

Would like… to work on a scenario for an anime, just out of curiosity.

My work : Consists of creating stories and setting up scenes with Claude Neix, with whom I have already had the opportunity to write as well as publish several novels in over ten countries!

It also falls on me to create and overlay speech bubbles, texts and sound effects. I also take care of all the retouching and preparation of the boards. Soon, I will be able to also take care of the toning. In Studio Gothika we work as a team, and each of us knows how to multitask when necessary.

Fell into manga because… I come from the movie industry. I used to alternate between being a 35mn operator, a cameraman and a superintendent of special effects. I find that, in manga, the cut-out process and dynamics very close to those of movies, which I really enjoy.

Work Methods : I always begin by manically cleaning the boards and illustrations. I eradicate the slightest trace of dust and brush smudges so that we can put tones or colors on an impeccable base. I also redraw the frames, redo the colors and densities if necessary, and when a finished drawing or board returns to me, I polish them by putting on the speech bubbles, sound effects and fonts.

Like… Creating stories and imagining plots.

Hate… Half-done, uneven or sloppy work.

Would like… to work on a long animated movie or anime series.
